LEARN MOREA delegation of the European Paratroopers Association was invited as guest to the French Foreign Legion's traditional festival of Camerone in Aubagne, France. On April 30, the Foreign Legion celebrates Camerone, it's the most important day of the Legion calendar. The festival honors the 62 legionnaires led by Captain Jean Danjou who fought to the death in the battle of Camerone against a Mexican contigent of 2,000 men in 1863.This year the ceremonies was held in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the battle of Bir Hakeim. During the ceremony, Captain Danjou’s wooden hand was carried by Hubert Germain former minister and veteran of the 13th DBLE, the last living Legion officer having taken part in this battle on the Free French side. | |
